ESWT (Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy)

Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) is a non-invasive treatment that involves the delivery of shock waves to injured soft tissue to reduce pain and improve healing.
ESWT is an important option for many patients with chronic tendinopathy who do not respond to conventional treatments. Chronic tendinopathy, which is often difficult to treat, is characterized by localized pain, and pathological changes in a tendon. Apart from athletes often affected by this disease, other people may also have tendinopathy.
Who receives ESWT treatment?
ESWT is primarily used in the treatment of common musculoskeletal conditions. The treatment covers both the upper and lower extremities. Applications of ESWT;
  • Elbow injuries
  • Lateral epicondyle
  • Medial epicondyle
  • Greater trochanter (gluteus medius and minimus)
  • Proximal hamstring origin
  • Rectus femoris
  • Distal quadriceps
  • Patellar tendon
  • Posterior tibial
  • Peroneal tendinosis
  • Noble
  • Plantar fascia
All of these conditions are injuries of the muscles and skeleton located in the arms and legs.
Benefits of ESWT
ESWT is an effective solution when musculoskeletal obstacles resulting from injury does not respond to first-line treatments such as rest, ice, therapeutic exercise, support, and orthosis, but surgery is not desired. It is the first choice of athletes who do not want to take a break from the season, especially due to surgery.
ESWT procedure
Generally, the treatment process consists of 30-minute sessions that take place once a week for 3 weeks. The effects of the treatment begin to emerge from the 2nd session. Recovery occurs in the 3rd session, but the desired symptom relief cannot be achieved in some patients. In this case, a few more sessions should be scheduled.
Side effects of ESWT are limited to mild bruising, swelling, pain, numbness, or tingling in the treated area, and improvement is minimal compared to surgical intervention. Most patients take a day or two off after treatment, but there is no need for a long recovery period.
This method, which does not require anesthesia, surgery, and medication, is effective and safe.
