Lokomat: Robot-Assisted Walking Therapy
Too many small steps can trigger great improvements. The concept of “task-specific learning” based on neuroplasticity argues that activities of daily life can be achieved and improved by training, thanks to continuous repetitions and intensive training.
Robotic Lokomat therapy meets this demand and allows intensive functional locomotion therapy with enhanced performance feedback.
What is robotic locomotion therapy?
Lokomat is a robotic treadmill training system that uses a bodyweight support system to suspend individuals while their legs are attached to robotic legs that aid basic walking functions. The Lokomat system allows the physiotherapist to control how fast the patient can walk, how much bodyweight the patient can support, and how much the robotic legs support the patient throughout their range of motion.
Features of robotic locomotion therapy
Studies show that motion therapy, supported by a robotically-assisted device on a treadmill, is an effective intervention to improve impaired walking function caused by neurological diseases and injuries.
The customized support and limb guidance provided by Lokomat allows patients with a wide range of gait disturbances to use this device in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
It plays an important role in the rehabilitation of neurological diseases as well as to improve mobility in individuals after stroke, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, and other neurological diseases and injuries.
Relatively short training sessions can be done in this labor-intensive therapy.
Besides, manually assisted gait therapy can be impulsive and motivating, especially in obese or spastic patients.
Lokomat therapy allows the management of intensive function by a single physiotherapist, especially in challenging patients.
Intensive functional locomotion therapy
The Lokomat consists of a robotic walking orthosis and an advanced bodyweight support system combined with a treadmill. The integrated biological feedback system monitors the patient’s gait, as well as providing real-time visual performance feedback to motivate the patient for active participation.
For faster progress, it is important to create individually adjusted therapy. In our hospital, a therapy program specific to everyone’s needs is prepared by considering personal factors.
