Tomosynthesis Mammography

The most modern device in breast cancer screening is 3D tomosynthesis digital mammography.
Breast tomosynthesis, which is a technology based on the basics of the known conventional tomography technique and uses the advantages of digital imaging, creates volumetric images of the examined breast and then constructs cross-sectional images from this volumetric information set.
Thanks to these millimetric sections, the breast tissue is displayed more clearly and in detail, and the location of the tumor, if any, is determined in 3 dimensions.
Cancerous tissue can be hidden in dense breast tissue, and therefore it may not be possible to view it with 2-dimensional mammography. Considering the deficiencies of the 2-dimensional image, the increase in accuracy rate achieved with 3-dimensional breast tomosynthesis becomes vital.
The Mammomat Inspiration Prime Edition used in Reyap Hospital is the newest and most advanced example of imaging and diagnostic devices, designed to provide perfect health care service to women.
Tomosynthesis procedure
The tomosynthesis procedure is very similar to that of a mammogram. Usually, the tomosynthesis procedure takes about 15 minutes. The patient, who comes to the hospital for tomosynthesis, is first taken to the dressing room to raise her dress above the waist, where she wears an apron or cloak. Then, one breast at a time of the patient who goes to the tomosynthesis device is positioned in the x-ray area.
In this procedure, the breast is not compressed as in a mammogram. However, the plates will still be lowered during the imaging procedure only to keep the chest still, and the X-ray tube is placed on the chest.
During the procedure, the X-ray tube moves by creating an arch above the chest.
During the procedure, 11 images of the chest are taken within 7 seconds. Later, the position is changed so that images of the other breast can be taken.
After this process is completed, the images are sent to the computer that will create a 3-dimensional image of both breasts. The final image is sent to the radiologist and then the doctor for examination.
Preparation for the procedure
Preparation for tomosynthesis is similar to preparing for mammography. Before the procedure, it is useful to pay attention to the following;
  • Wear two-piece clothing. This makes it easier to undress for the procedure and allows the waist below to remain clothed.
  • Tell your doctor if you think you could be pregnant or if you are breastfeeding.
  • Plan the procedure a week or two after your menstrual cycle to reduce breast tenderness.
  • Limit the amount of caffeine you drink two weeks before your procedure to reduce possible breast sensitivity.
  • Do not use deodorant, powder, lotion, oil, or cream above the waist on the day of the procedure.
  • Tell your doctor about any symptoms you may have, surgeries on or near your breasts, family history, or any hormone use before the procedure.
  • Let the imaging technician know if you have breast implants before the procedure.
